Habana Catapults into Record Books

The Springboks winger and all-round speed merchant, Bryan Habana, has become South Africa’s all time leading try scorer, notching up his 39th against Namibia.

Habana in 2008... I'm sure he'd give this try scoring record a thumbs up too!

Habana became South Africa’s try scoring record holder in the 23rd minute of a rather one-sided [but still error-strewn] group stage match-up against Namibia. He takes the title from previous record holder, Joost van der Westhuizen.

SA tidied up their game in the second half putting another 8 tries past Namibia and looking more like the defending champs they are.

What do you think? Have they got the skills to go all the way or is the close contest with Wales last week a sign that they’re not on top form this time out?

England RWC Squad Announced

Following hot on the heals of the Scotland squad announcement yesterday, Martin Johnson named his final 30 men to take on the worlds best at the Rugby World Cup later this month.

In a press conference yesterday, Tuesday 22nd August, Johnson gave a few surprises in his line-up; none more so than the omission of centre Riki Flutey. He has been relegated to the ‘on call’ list should any of the 30 sustain injury; his place at centre being filled from the short list of, amongst others, Matt Banahan, Shontayne Hape and Manu Tuilagi.

Lewis Moody will take the Captains spot in a team sporting considerable RWC heritage; eleven players have featured in previous World Cup tournaments – five winners from 2003 and eight from 2007′s final defeat to South Africa.

The only uncapped player in the squad is London Wasps Joe Simpson. The scrum half is “ecstatic” about his selection and says he is relishing the prospect of the World Cup despite his lack of Test experience.

At the other end of the spectrum is Jonny Wilkinson; taking part in his fourth Rugby World Cup, the 32 year old equals the English record of Jason Leonard and Mike Catt.

Martin Johnson faced some tough decisions when naming his final 30; he feels he’s got the composition right and says,

“there is great sense of unity in this group and we are pleased with the depth across the squad”

Time will tell if he’s got it right!
